From London to Edinburgh: The Best UK Locations to Learn English

One of the best ways to learn a language is to go to a country where the language is spoken and experience it. Whether it’s for an Erasmus exchange or a weekend away, I would highly recommend visiting the UK and practising your language skills in its land or origin. So here are some of the top places I would recommend visiting if you’re eager to explore the UK!

London

The nation’s capital and the most popular tourist spot in the country. Despite not being my favourite place in the UK, I’d highly recommend visiting at least once to experience it. One of the many benefits of London is that there is always something to see or do such as seeing the sights like Buckingham Palace or the Tower of London or visiting iconic locations like the National Gallery or the Natural History Museum. There’s something for everyone in London so don’t be shy and explore this metropolis!

Manchester

Moving to the north, we can find Manchester. A city of music, culture and world famous football! Take a wander around the bohemian Northern Quarter or check out a gig at the numerous venues across the city, as the hometown of many well-known groups such as Oasis, The Stone Roses and Joy Division, you won’t be disappointed with the options! If football is more of your thing then head over to the Etihad or Old Trafford stadiums to see some Premier League action.

York

If you’re looking for a city break somewhere quiet and traditional then York is the place for you. A city steeped in history and beauty which often goes unnoticed by many. Take a walk down the Shambles or along the old Roman city walls to experience what the city would’ve looked like centuries ago. To learn more about the city, pay a visit to the Jorvik Museum or the York Minster cathedral and to wind down at the end of the day, why not take a boat tour down the river Ouse or with a spot of afternoon tea in one of the city’s many cafes?

Edinburgh

Described as the Athens of the north due to it being the birthplace of many intellectuals of recent history, Scotland’s capital is a must-see location. Take a wander down the bustling streets and check out the city’s outstanding castle. If you’re visiting in the summer and are in the mood for a laugh then make sure to look into the Edinburgh Fringe Festival- a comedy event where you can see up and coming and famous faces from the world of stand-up. Edinburgh’s position and great transport links also makes it a great starting point if you’re interested in seeing more of Scotland such as the city of Glasgow or if you’re looking to escape the city then head further north to the Highlands!

The Yorkshire Dales

Fed up of cities and want to visit somewhere off the beaten track? Then the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the place for you! Perhaps not as well known as the Lake District in Cumbria or Snowdonia in Wales, The Dales still has a lot to offer in terms of quaint villages, stunning landscapes and a blank canvas for outdoor activities. See the Castle in Skipton, explore the caves and waterfalls in Ingleton or pitch up a tent for the weekend in Malham. Of course, don’t count on the weather to be great but expect to be amazed by how much of a good time you had!

These are just a few of the many spots worth visiting in the UK and there are plenty more that I would recommend including Liverpool, Oxford and Brighton so make sure to read more into the many wonders of the UK before making a decision on where to visit.
