How to Stay Calm During Your Speaking Exam

Taking an English speaking exam can feel daunting, but with the right preparation and mindset, you can boost your confidence and perform at your best. Here are some practical tips to help you stay calm and focused on the day of your exam.

  1. Practise Regularly
Consistency is key when improving your spoken English. Make time to practise every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Read aloud, record yourself, or engage in small talk in English to get used to forming sentences naturally.
  2. Find a Speaking Partner
Speaking with others is one of the most effective ways to prepare. If possible, find a friend, tutor, or language partner to practise with. Engaging in real conversations will help you become more comfortable and confident in speaking spontaneously.

If you want to do regular practice with a partner then take a look at the PDF for this blog post with a collection of speaking exercises for you to do before the exam!

  1. Simulate Exam Conditions
Rehearse under exam-like conditions to familiarise yourself with the format and time limits. Record yourself answering common questions or practise in front of a mirror. This will help you identify areas for improvement and build confidence.
  2. Expand Your Vocabulary
A rich vocabulary will enable you to express yourself clearly and effectively. Learn useful phrases and synonyms for common words, and practise using them in context. However, avoid memorising entire answers—examiners value natural responses over rehearsed ones.
  3. Stay Calm and Breathe
Nervousness can affect your fluency, so take deep breaths before and during the exam to stay composed. If you don’t understand a question, don’t panic—ask the examiner to repeat or clarify it.
  4. Speak Clearly and at a Steady Pace
Avoid speaking too quickly, as this can lead to mistakes or unclear pronunciation. Focus on enunciating your words properly and maintaining a natural rhythm.
  5. Listen Carefully
Effective communication is not just about speaking but also about understanding. Pay close attention to the examiner’s questions and respond appropriately. If necessary, take a brief moment to gather your thoughts before answering.

By following these tips and maintaining a positive mindset, you’ll be well on your way to a successful English speaking exam. Remember, confidence comes with preparation—so keep practising and believe in yourself!
